HEALTH IN THE BEAGLE

Always do your homework before buying a beagle puppy, we are seeing lots of beagles advertised without health tests, you want your puppy to live a healthy and happy long life so please ask the breeder if they are clear from the following diseases.

Image:

Laforas Disease  is a rare type of inherited epilepsy in canines which can occur in any canine breed but seems predisposed to Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds, Basset Hounds and Beagles.  The Beagle breed seems predisposed to a more severe type of Lafora disease than other canine breeds and it seems that the Beagle variety of the disease is more drug resistant as well.  The disease generally develops after the age of 5 years and is a gradually progressive disease which can lead to ataxia, blindness and dementia, just to name a few neurological changes for which the disease can be responsible.

MLS..Musladin-Leuke Syndrome is a recessive mutation that affects Beagles. The mutation prevents normal formation of the skin and connective tissue, affecting the dog's appearance and gait. A beagle with MLS may be smaller in size and walk on his toes rather than on the pad of the foot.

NCCD...The clinical signs of NCCD are due to damage in their cerebellum, which is the part of the brain that controls movement and balance. This disease has minimal progression, but currently has no cure.

DM Degenerative myelopathy, also known as chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy (CDRM), is a disease affecting the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. The symptoms result from degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord.

Factor VII deficiency is a mild to moderate inherited blood clotting disorder. Affected dogs may appear mostly healthy but may be prone to increased bleeding tendency. Phenotype: Affected dogs may appear mostly healthy but may be prone to increased bleeding tendenc

IGS...Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome is a disorder found in Beagles and Border Collies where vitamin B12 is unable to be absorbed through the gut. Phenotype: Owners of IGS affected dogs often note a lack of appetite, failure to gain weight, lethargy, and malaise that intensifies after eating.

POAG..Primary open angle glaucoma in the Beagle breed is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from a mutation in the gene ADAMTS10. The mutation causes pressure in the eye to increase and, if untreated, nerve damage, vision loss, lens subluxation, and blindness may result.

Pra-Cord1/PRA-crd4 this inherited primary open angle glaucomain Beagles results from a mutation in the gene ADAMTS10. The condition is characterized by increased pressure in the eye; nerve damage, vision loss, lens subluxation, and blindness may result.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR PUPPIES BONES HAVENT EVEN SET WHEN YOU GET HIM/HER HOME PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND DO NOT OVER EXCERCISE

This is something everyone should see and remember...

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind.  Their bones do not even touch yet.  They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly.  Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones.  In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint.  When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise.  So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

A bit of back-story:  This is a baby puppy who had a knock to his elbow and wasn't using it properly, so he was taken to the vet.  There is nothing wrong in these x-rays, thankfully it is a soft tissue injury and he is expected to be fine.
